Glossary of Terms

The following ingredients can be found in one or more of the products offered on this site. Although each ingredient is defined in a specific way, ingredients commonly have more than one use or benefit.

Apple Powder (Pectin): Apple powder is a water-soluble fiber, helpful in removing cholesterol out of the intestines and delaying glucose absorption. It is one of the compounds that acts as a substrate for the production of short chain fatty acids that help maintain a healthy colonic mucosa. Helpful in removing toxins.

Arabinogalactan (Hypericum perforatum): Arabinogalactan helps support the immune system due to its ability to promote the proliferation or activity of key cells involved in normal immune function.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa): a blood purifier; reduces and prevents symptoms caused by arthritis, bursitis, and gout; lowers cholesterol. Studies indicate it lowers blood cholesterol levels. Used as a diuretic (to promote the excretion of urine) and as an arthritis remedy,. Some western herbalists recommend it to help treat diabetes. It has also been used to treat asthma and hay fever.

Aloe (Aloe barbadensis): Aloe Vera is a powerful laxative and known to be one of the finest body cleansers, removing morbid matter from the stomach, liver, kidneys, spleen and bladder and is considered to be the finest colon cleanser known. Applied topically, Aloe Vera is known to rejuvenate wrinkled, sun-aged skin, and will stimulate cell regeneration. Application also promotes the healing of sores, insect bites, cuts and burns, and is an effective treatment against psoriasis and eczema. Aloe contains enzymes that relieve pain, and as a mild anesthetic, it relieves itching and swelling. Its topical application will help burns from scarring. Aloe Vera is an astringent and emollient; it is antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial.

Alpha Lipoic Acid: Helps protect the body from free radicals. Alpha Lipoic Acid is an antioxidant, and is widely used in prevention of various diseases. Its main function is to increase production of glutathione, which helps dissolve toxic substances in the liver.

Angelica pubescens root (Angelica Pubescentis): The roots are anodyne, anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, carminative, nervine and as a vasodilator. Supports menstrual health. Supports prostrate health in men. It is also used as an appetite stimulant and to treat problems of the digestive system and liver. Helps relieve gas, can help stimulate appetite; helps the skin eliminate toxins; may be used in anorexia nervosa.

Avocado Oil (Persea gratissima): Avocado has been considered a beauty treatment and to possess anti-ageing properties as an emollient that helps to improve dry skin. It works internally (perhaps because of its high vitamin E content) toward the surface of the skin, soothing deep muscle inflammation; and applied topically, the oil extract keeps both the skin soft and the hair lustrous. Avocado fights the ageing process and helps the skin ward off the damaging effects of sun and wind. There is some evidence that Avocado may be of some help in relieving symptoms of osteoarthritis when applied topically.

Barley Bran Fiber: Helps to relieve constipation, lowers cholesterol while purifying the blood, balances the chemistry in the body and builds the blood because of its high iron content. Assists in digestion.

Bifidobacterium Bifidum: Bifidobacterium bifidum has been used to maintain or restore a normal, healthy condition in the intestines.

Black Cohosh (Cimacifuga racemosa): an emmenagogue; assists in balancing female hormones and regulating menstrual periods; used as an anti-inflammatory in arthritis13; helps lower high blood pressure; sometimes induces labor and regulates contractions.

Borage (Borago officinalis): lactagoge; diaphoretic; anti-inflammatory; lowers fevers during convalescence.

Burdock Root (Arctium lappa): stimulates appetite and digestion; reduces arthritic pain; blood purifier; treats scrofula, and other cankerous skin conditions; Burdock root also combined with dandelion and yellow dock can cure a the swelling of a sore growing on top of a lip.

Butternut Bark (Juglans cinera): eliminates intestinal worms; a mild laxative; increases secretion of bile and activity of glands in the walls of the intestinal tract.

Cayenne (Capsicum annum): a blood purifier; lowers blood cholesterol levels; helps reduce blood pressure; improves circulation and respiration.

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla): Chamomile is used for its calming activity and is a popular remedy for soothing the digestive system and relaxing the muscles. Helps eliminate of bacteria that cause strep throat; used to treat skin problems. The essential oil's in Chamomile are a wonderful blend of many individual oils. Pharmacological research has suggested that there is a potential strengthening the protective mucosal barrier against ulceration. Action: Nervine, anti-spasmodic, carminative, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial. Promotes general relaxation and relieves anxiety.

Choline (as choline bitartrate): Choline serves various functions in our bodies – in the structure of cell membranes, protecting our livers from accumulating fat, as the precursor molecule for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Choline has been shown to protect the liver from certain types of damage, and can help reverse damage that has already occurred. Additionally, it may help lower cholesterol and homocysteine levels associated with cardiovascular disease.

Chondroitin Sulphate: Helps build and maintain healthy, strong, and flexible joints.

Chorella Algae (Chlorella pyrendoidosa): Helps to improve bad breath, as well as to reduce the odors of urine, feces, and infected wounds. Has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties. Aids in the relief of gastrointestinal problems, such as constipation, and to stimulate blood cell formation in anemia.

Club Moss (Lycopodium clavatum): Its mild diuretic action may help to reduce swelling due to water retention. Helps relieve digestive, bladder, kidney, and menstrual complaints.

Cnidium monniera seed (Cnidium monniera): Supports increased blood flow. Supports prostrate health in men.

Coenzyme Q10: CoEnzyme Q10 has powerful antioxidant effects, and destroys free radicals in your body. CO Q10's role in energy production has particular importance for athletes and bodybuilders. CoEnzyme Q10 helps the body's energy production in the form of ATP. Co Q10 has been shown to help weight loss because it helps stimulate the body's metabolism. It has also been shown to be beneficial for the cardiovascular system.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA): Helps prevents lipogenesis (storage of fat in adipose tissue). Aids in toning the body.

Citrus Bioflavonoid Complex: Essential for the proper absorption and use of Vitamin C. Bioflavonoids, or flavonoids, can be found in the pigments of fruits and vegetables. Flavonoids demonstrate potential antimutagenicity ability as well as antioxidant activity. Recently, studies have taken a look at flavonoids role in the prevention of carcinogenesis, as well as in the maintenance of capillaries. Bioflavonoids are an important part of the daily diet.

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra): Elderberry contains Vitamins A, C and bioflavinoids. It also contains properties that act as sedatives to relieve pain. Elderberry's action works as an expectorant and has anti-catarrhal and anti-inflammatory properties. Elderberry works to detoxify the blood cells of waste and increases the circulation of blood. Applied externally for burns, rashes, and minor skin problems.

Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus): Support for increased stamina, as well as, endocrine system and adrenal gland support vital to sexual function and libido.

Fennel Seed (Foeniculum vulgare): Helps prevent gas and upset stomach. Acts as a mild diuretic, choleretic (increase in production of bile).

Fenugreek Seed (Frigonella foenum-graecum): Fenugreek helps to bind dietary fats to reduce their absorption. Fenugreek fiber also contributes to a feeling of fullness that may curb excessive appetite. Helps improve cholesterol levels.

Feverfew (Tanateum parsenium): anti-inflammatory for arthritis; remedy for migraine headaches; relieves painful and slow menstrual flows; promotes relaxation; uterine stimulant.

Garlic (Allium sativum): lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Helps to support the immune system and shown to be anti-infective, attacking or killing a wide range of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, protozoans, and viruses.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale): gastrointesinal; stimulates circulation; a useful diaphoretic, promoting perspiration. As a gargle it can give temporary relief of sore throats. Has calming effect on the digestive system. Helps to expel gas from the intestines.

Ginkgo Leaf (Ginkgo Biloba - (Ginkgoaceae): Facilitates microvascular circulation. Increases blood circulation, which increases oxygen levels in cell tissue.

Ginseng, Asain (Panax quinquefolia): an adaptogen (helps the system adapt to a variety of changes); increases energy; decreases blood pressure.

Ginseng, Siberian (Eleutherococcus senticosus): an adaptogen; lowers stress; both raises and/or lowers blood sugar as needed.

Goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea): is used to flush impurities from the kidneys, bladder and urinary tract, helping to treat urinary inflammation and infection (cystitis, urethritis, vaginitis) and clearing kidney stones and gravel. It also helps to thin and expel mucus and congestion from the upper respiratory tract and help coughs of colds and flu. Applied topically in lotions for the relief of insect bites and stings and to promote the healing of wounds, ulcers, eczema and other skin diseases.

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis): used primarily for its anti-inflammatory action to soothe irritated mucous membranes. Helps soothe irritated mucous membranes. Facilitates digestion by stimulating the production of bile. antibiotic, antiseptic, internal bleeding, colon inflammation, eye infections, internal hemorrhaging, infection, liver problems, excessive menstruation, mouth sores and vaginitis.

Glucosamine Sulphate: Helps build and maintain healthy, strong, and flexible joints.

Glucomannan (Amorphophallus Konjac): Glucomannan is high in fiber, essential for cleaning the digestive system. Helps reduce cholesterol, helps maintain regularity and promotes bowel health. It helps to normalize blood sugar, to relieve stress on the pancreas and to discourage blood sugar abnormalities.

Gotu Kola (Hydrocotyl asciatica): Helps in the prevention of mental fatigue and enhanced concentration and memory. A balancing tonic that both increases energy and relaxes the body. Stimulates the central nervous system, aids circulation especially in the legs, and is a mild diuretic. Aids in many types of wound healing. Used for rheumatism, blood diseases, mental disorders, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, sore throat, and hepatitis.

Grape Seed Oil (Vitis vinifera): is an effective free-radical fighter. Topically, grape seed oil is a preferred cosmetic ingredient for damaged and stressed tissues, possessing regenerative and restructuring qualities which allow a better control of skin moisturization. It can help skin retain the normal structure of epithelium cells and nerve cells via supporting the cell membranes. It is noted to be especially effective for repair of the skin around the eyes. Used as an all-over skin moisturizer, grape seed oil is known to reduce the look of stretch marks.

Green Tea Leaf Extract 4:1 (Camelliae sinensis): Green tea extract is bioflavonoid rich, and one of its primary uses is fighting free radicals in your body. Green tea extract contains high level of polyphenols (a bioflavonoid), and it's also a rich source of EGCG (an antioxidant), that's over 200 times more potent than Vitamin E in fighting free radicals. .The EGCG in green tea extract helps protect against digestive and respiratory infections, blocks the actions of carcinogens which promotes cancer, is anti-bacterial, and also helps lower cholesterol levels.

Guarana Seed (Paulinia cupana, Sapindaceae): Guaraná contains a substance similar to caffeine called guaranine. Guaranine stimulates the central nervous system, increases metabolism, and has a mild diuretic effect. It has been suggested that in combination with other herbs, guarana (guaranine) may be effective in helping to promote weight loss. This effect is probably due to an appetite suppressing mechanism, an increase in calorie burning, or both.

Hawthorne Berry (Crataegus laevigata): Hawthorn helps promotes healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels by relaxing blood vessels, increasing metabolism in the heart muscle, and improving blood supply to the heart. Also used for sleeplessness, nervousness, poor digestion, and weight control.

Hops Flower (Humulus lupulus - chamomilla): Useful as a sleeping aid and for restlessness and anxiety.

Irish Moss (Chrondrus crispus): Irish Moss helps in recovery of inflamed tissue disorders, also lung and kidney problems because of its mucilage content. Because of its iodine content, it helps in glandular problems. Irish Moss aids in healing mucous membranes. Also helps to soften the skin and prevent wrinkles.

Juniper (Juniperus communis): Juniper has been used to clear uric acid from the body. It is high in natural insulin, and has the ability to heal the pancreas where there has been no permanent damage. It is useful for all urinary infections and for water retention problems, as well as gout. Juniper is used externally as a compress to treat acne, athlete's foot, and dandruff. It is also used for joints affected by arthritis and rheumatism.

Kelp (Fucus versiculosus): Kelp as a source of iodine assists in making thyroid hormones, which are necessary for maintaining normal metabolism in all cells of the body.

Kudzo Root (Pueraria lobata): Helps increase blood flow throughout the body.

Lactobacillus Acidophillus: Acidophilus can replace the friendly intestinal bacteria destroyed by broad-spectrum antibiotics—bacteria that are needed for digestion and to help suppress undesirable bacteria. Preliminary research indicates that acidophilus may help improve immunity, treat allergies (particularly to foods), improve skin health, treat herpes infections, reduce cholesterol levels, and lower risk of colon cancer and other cancers.

L-alinine: Aids in the metabolism of glucose, a simple carbohydrate used by the body for energy.

L-arginine: Precursor to nitric oxide (NO). – L-arginine is a non-essential amino acid found in a variety of foods. L-arginine helps make nitric oxide, which dilates or relaxes arteries, making blood flow more freely and thus lowering blood pressure. Nitric oxide also helps prevent clot formation and plaque buildup on artery walls that can lead to a heart attack or stroke. As a sexual support supplement, it has been found that NO increases blood supply to the genital area which can help performance..

L-Cysteine: Aids in the production of the antioxidant glutathione to sequence free radicals and reduce the damage from lipid oxidation.

L-Glutamine: Necessary for cerebral function and supporting the neurotransmitter level of GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid). Helps improve mental capacities. Helps improve overall energy.

L-lysine (as L-Lysine HCI): Supports health and well being. L-Lysine maximizes the utilization of fatty acids that is required for energy production and is an essential amino acid vital in the make-up of critical body proteins. It is needed for growth and development, tissue repairs, and production enzymes.

L-Tyrosine: Precursor to several neurotransmitters to support healthy attitude and enhance mood.

Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra): soothes and heals mucous membranes in the intestinal tract; treats ulcers. Shown to have an expectorant effect which increases the secretion of the bronchial glands. Aids in the relief of throat irritations, lung congestion, and bronchitis.

Lutein: (luteus ) A carotenoid that helps protect the eye against free radicals.

Lycopene: (Lycopersicon ). Lycopene is the red pigment, a carotene that makes tomatoes red. It is one of the most abundant carotenoids in the human body. Helps Enhance vision and supports a healthy prostate.

Marshmallow root (Althea officinalis): the root soothes mucous membranes; helps heal wounds; ointments and cremes made from the root are effective on chapped hands and lips; internally treats inflammation and problems of the genito-urinary tract; mouthwash; soothes teething pain.

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria): Meadowsweet is used to treat headaches, fever, arthritis, rheumatism, menstrual cramps, and flu, as well as diarrhea in children. Use it in place of aspirin, or white willow. It is used to rebuild the digestive system during recovery from drug and alcohol abuse.

Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum): Milk thistle is nutritional support for healthy, normal liver function. The active ingredient, silymarin, helps the liver regenerate normally, work better and produce more of the important antioxidant enzymes it uses to cleanse the blood, especially under stressful conditions. Helps facilitate a healthy, normal liver function. Helps promote bile production used to break down fats.

Oat Bran: Helps lower cholesterol levels in the blood. Helps reduce blood glucose and insulin responses. Control of blood glucose and insulin levels is essential in prevention of many of the complications associated with diabetes.

Olive Leaf (Olea europaea): The leaves have been used traditionally to support the immune system and supply antimicrobial agents.

Papaya Leaf (Carica papaya): Contains the powerful proteolytic enzymes "papain" and "chymopapain", which digest proteins, small peptides, amides, and esters. Help to improve the digestive system.

Panax Ginseng Root Extract (7% ginsenosides) (Panax SPP – (Araliaceae): Aids in increasing endurance, longevity and vitality

Peppermint (Mentha piperita): reduces cramps, antispasm, stimulant.

Plantain (Plantago ovaga): alleviates skin infection and inflammation; also reduces pain and coughing. Plantain is known to help reduce inflammation of the upper respiratory tract.

Psyllium Husk (Plantago psyllium): Shown to cause a significant increase in the subjective feeling of fullness and a reduction in the consumption of fat and calories.  Helps to regulate bowel movements and alleviate diarrhea and constipation.

Red raspberry leaves (Rubus idaeus): A source of flavonoids that exhibits antioxidant properties. Rich in minerals and vitamins that promote the health of hair, skin, nails, bones and teeth.  It has an old reputation as a woman's friend that helps to tone the uterine muscles (particularly valuable during labor and delivery and recovery after birth).  Helps to provide relief for heavy cramping and excessive bleeding during menstruation.

Red clover (Trifolium pratense): helps treat gout; reduces coughing; expels mucous from the lungs and throat; used to treat and prevent cancer. Helps aid in the treatment of chronic skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis): treats headaches; soothes upset stomach; a muscle stimulant; soothes irritated nerves. Rosemary is an excellent memory and brain stimulant that is said to improve to brain function by feeding it with oxygen-rich blood. It also contains compounds that are said to prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a brain chemical that allows the nerve cells responsible for memory and reasoning to communicate with one another.

RoseOx (Rosmarinus officinalis): An antioxidant booster for superior antioxidant defense. RoseOx helps protect the body’s cells and enhances the benefits of other antioxidants by supporting the immune system.

Rutin (Ruta graveolens): A plant flavonoid with antioxidant activity and supports a strong capillary system.

Saw Palmetto (Serenoa serrulata): anti-inflammatory; appetite stimulant; digestive aid; diuretic; relives dysmenorrhea that results from lack of uterine tone. Saw palmetto has long been used in Europe to treat an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Senna Stem Extract (Cassia angustifolia): To provide relief of occasional mild to moderate constipation and as an occasional mild purgative.

Shea Butter (Butyrospermum parkii): Shea Butter is only found in the tropics of Africa. It is extracted from the nuts of the Shea-Karite tree. It nourishes the skin with Vitamins A, E and F. Siberian Ginseng Root Extract (0.8% eleutherosides) (Eleuthero): Aids in increasing endurance, longevity and vitality.

Slippery elm (Ulmus fulva): demulcent; soothes damaged tissue; treats gastritis and ulcers; very effective for coughs; very effective for sore throat; diarrhea; sores; remedy for broken bones; anti-inflammatory for the stomach.contraindicated during pregnancy. Helps to relieve constipation.

Soya Isoflavones: Has the ability to mimic to that of estrogen to inhibit tyrosine kinase and prevent the osteoclastic activity (breakdown of bone density) Helps balance hormones and reduce age-related bone density loss.

Threonine: Good levels of threonine are found in most meats, dairy and eggs, as well as in lower quantities in wheat germ, nuts, beans and some vegetables. Threonine is an essential amino acid that promotes normal growth by helping to maintain the proper protein balance in the body. Threonine also helps support cardiovascular, liver, central nervous, and immune system function.

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris): Thyme is considered an excellent expectorant that has been used s to treat upper respiratory and lung disorders. The herb is said to be ideal for deep-seated chest infections that are marked by thick, yellow phlegm and will help loosen and expel mucous congestion from the lungs and head. Thyme's thymol content is the active principle that acts not only as an expectorant, but also acts as a germicidal that simultaneously treats infections of the upper respiratory passages. It has been used effectively for sore throats, coughs, croup, whooping cough, acute bronchitis, laryngitis and asthma.

White willow (Salix alba): pain reliever; relieves headaches, fevers, arthritis, sore muscles, and chills.

Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens): Wintergreen is a useful external remedy for the pain of rheumatoid arthritis. In the past, it has also been used for muscle, joint, or nerve pain, stomach or back pain, various kinds of inflammation, and painful menstruation.

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium): purifies the blood; reduces fever; lowers blood pressure; digestive stimulant; diaphoretic.

Yellow Dock (Rumex crispus): clears skin problems including eczema and psoriasis; relieves glandular inflammation and swelling; eliminates ringworm; In India yellow Dock even hardened weak gums (softened by having a bad diet); also has some antibiotic properties.

Zizyphi Fructus: A natural ingredient that supports the increase of Nitric Oxide in the body, which is responsible for promoting blood flow to vital organs. Zizyphi fructus, a constituent of antiasthmatic herbal medicine, stimulates airway epithelial ciliary motility through nitric oxide generation.


Biotin: Aids in the utilization of protein and other nutrients; aids in cell growth and fatty acid production; promotes the health of sweat glands, nerve tissue, bone marrow, male sex glands, blood cells, skin and hair; cures some forms of baldness, and is used in preventative treatments for baldness; prevents the hair from turning prematurely gray; alleviates eczema and dermatitis

Choline: Minimizes excess fat in the liver. Necessary in fat and cholesterol metabolism. Supports gallbladder regulation & nerve transmission.

Folic Acid: May reduce the risk of a heart attack by lowering homocysteine levels. In recent years, high levels of homocysteine have been found to be associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries due to the accumulation of fatty plaques). Protects against birth defects by helping regulate embryonic and fetal nerve cell formation; protects against intestinal parasites and food poisoning; may delay graying hair when used in conjunction with pantothenic acid and PABA; promotes healthier looking skin, is considered a brain food; is needed for energy production, and the formation of red blood cells; strengthens the immune system by aiding the proper formation and functioning of white blood cells; important for healthy cell division and replication.

Pantothenic Acid (as d-calcium pantothenate): Has been considered the "Anti-Stress" Vitamin because of its important role in the functioning of the adrenal glands, which produce hormones that help our bodies respond to stress; plays an important role in making hemoglobin, which transports oxygen throughout our bodies; helpful in detoxifying harmful chemicals such as herbicides and insecticides; along with anti-oxidants, zinc, copper, and vitamin D, will prevent accelerated joint degeneration, by encouraging your body's ability to regenerate cartilage; fights infections by building antibodies; prevents fatigue, and used by athletes to boost performance; used to reduce the adverse and toxic effects of many antibiotics; stimulates the release of energy from carbohydrates, fats and protein; promotes the production of red blood cells and sex hormones; helps with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and menopausal discomforts; lowers high cholesterol and triglycerides.

Quercetin (as quercetin dihydrate): A very potent bioflavonoid found in red wine, green tea, tomatoes, onions, and green beans. A natural anti-oxidant, which protects cells in the body from damage by "free radicals". Heart disease and high cholesterol is partially caused by free radical damage to blood vessels. May protect against heart attacks and strokes; recommended as a treatment for allergies, hay fever, and asthma because it helps prevent immune cells from releasing histamine, the chemical that initiates the itching, sneezing, and swelling of an allergic reaction; helps prevent itchy eyes, runny noses, and scratchy throats; in animal studies has shown to protect against a variety of cancers; may help stop cancer at its earliest stage by preventing the damaging changes in the cells that initiate cancer.

Vitamin A & Beta Carotene: Prevents eye problems, skin disorders (acne). Enhances immunity. An antioxidant, it helps protect cells against cancer & slows the aging process. Beta-carotene is converted to vitamin A in the liver. Helps repair body tissue.
